My iPhone screen was recently replaced which was more expensive than I would have liked and a few weeks later my lock/sleep button became impossible to press without pressing it against a hard object. I was told it was probably the button which was integrated into a series of cables and is a difficult and expensive fix. Instead of dropping more money on this phone since the iPhone 5 will be on the way shortly I think I found a fix that is much better than even the original sleep button itself.

The first fix is to find an alternative to lock the phone as you don’t want to use the battery like crazy or pocket dial a random person. I installed activator on my phone and set a downward swipe from the status bar to lock the phone. It is very intuitive and easier than pressing the button itself and can be done with one hand smoothly.

Step 1: Activator Home Screen > Anywhere

Step 2: Use the Status Bar > Swipe Down Event

Step 3: Assign This action to Sleep

The other functions missing without the button are screenshots and powering off the device. The screenshots problem was solved with a hold status bar action in activator and power off/reboot are easily handled with sbsettings with minimal effort. I hope this helps someone else with a similar problem.
